Groups assignment-

 Your assignment:
You have a group of three. Your group needs to figure out the motions of the Sun, Moon and Earth, and be able to demonstrate them accurately. You ALL need to be able to answer questions

 Work on S,M,E assignment

Day & night motion
time- how long is a day on Earth?  the Moon?  the Sun?
tilt- is there one?  what is it?
Orientation of Earth's axis- what does it point to as it moves around the Sun?
Rotate vs revolve- what is the difference
Year motion- sun moon and earth move to show how a year passes.
Year time- how long is a year exactly
Leap year- why do we have one?  What is it?
Moon year & time- how long is a year on the Moon?
Moon “day” & time- how long is a day on the Moon?
Cause of tides- explain
neap- what is it?  what is the arrangement of the S,E,M?
spring  " "
Solar eclipse arrangement
Lunar eclipse arrangement
Seasons- What causes the seasons?
winter- where is the Earth when it is winter?
spring "
summer"
fall"
equinox- what is it?  When are they?
solstice What? When?

Gravity- The force of attraction between objects due to their mass.
Mass- The amount of matter in an object.
Weight- Is the measure of the gravitational force on an object.
Law of Universal Gravitation
1. The gravitational force increases as the mass of the objects increases.
2. The gravitational force decreases as the distance between the objects increases.
Rotate- to spin on axis = to one day
revolve-orbit- to go around a star or planet ( = to a year)
eccentricity- the measure of how round or elongated an ellipse is.

Gravity Lab - FREE - Gravity Lab is a gravity simulator for iPad. It allows you to create dozens of particles with different masses and different initial velocities by simply tapping the screen or drawing a velocity vector. The positions and velocities of all the particles are recalculated in real time. According to Newton's law of universal gravitation, every massive body in the universe influences every other massive body, and it works exactly the same in Gravity Lab. You can toggle a switch to show the acceleration vectors of the bodies, which are proportional to the forces between the bodies and inversely proportional to their masses.
Gravity lab is a perfect aid for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of physics, or just willing to play around with their own simulated universe.

Gravity Lab includes a short 4-page guide explaining the Newton's law of universal gravitation, the first two of the three Kepler's laws of planetary motion and the concept of gravity assist in spaceflight. All these concepts can be demonstrated using Gravity Lab.

What you can do:
- create your own solar system
- demonstrate complex interaction patterns of multiple massive bodies
- collide massive bodies and demonstrate the conservation of momentum
- display vectors of acceleration due to gravitational forces and observe the acceleration of orbiting bodies
- observe first two of the three Kepler's laws of planetary motion
- demonstrate gravitational slingshot (gravity assist) for increasing the spacecraft's velocity
- observe effects of changing gravitational constant on the gravitational field using "Gravity well" mesh type

Welcome to 8th grade!

This is an exciting new year for 8th grade science.  We have iPads! and the country is shifting towards the NextGen Science standards.

At this point the year will have to unfold.  8th grade at WJHS focuses on Earth & Space science. We begin now with Space!  NASA plays a big role in our class.

The main point to remember as we start a new year- I am here to assist learning. It is the responsibility of the student ( you!) to take responsibility for your learning.
